Some Great Turkey Day Decorations

November18

Guest post written by Donna Whitney

If there’s anything that’s worth doing around the holidays — besides spending time with your family — it’s decorating with all kinds of great holiday decorations. I really love making them too, so I always plan that stuff around what holiday and what crafts I’m going to make for fun. My daughter also loves to make decorations like I do. we make a lot of fun out of the whole thing and I’m so excited that it’s about time to decorate for Christmas again! But first, there’s Thanksgiving and all the decorating that comes along with it.

When I was online getting some ideas about really exciting Thanksgiving decorations, I ran across teh website GetClearwirelessinternet.com and after I looked through it a little bit I decided to switch over my home internet service to one of the packages that I saw on that site.

I found some directions for a turkey banner, so I decided to make that to hang up in our dining room. It was a little tough folding it and then cutting it out to where it was a bunch of turkeys, but I somehow made it work and it goes really well with the rest of my decorations!

Ford Mustang

August23

The Ford Mustang was consider the “cool” car when I was growing up. The car was introduced the first time on April 17, 1964 at the World’s Fair in New York. The first Mustangs came in a coupe of a convertible style. The first Mustang was sold to Captain Stanley Tucker an airline pilot. The car was not supposed to be sold and Ford wanted the car back. Tucker drove the car for two years and put 10,000 miles on it. Ford made a deal with Tucker. They would trade him the 1 millionth Mustang in exchange for the first one. Tucker accepted, but instead of the 1 millionth Mustang he asked for a 1966 Silver Frost model with a black convertible top. The #1 Ford Mustang was given to the Ford Museum and was restored again in 2003.

A lot of people make a habit out of restoring old Mustang cars. It is hard to find older Mustang parts, but if you want to get your 1987 or newer Mustang in good working order you can pick up new Mustang exhaust and other Mustang parts and get free shipping as well.

First Cell Phone

July7

Technology has come a long way! Today, I am salivating over the new Nokia N95 8GB phone that looks similar to the iPhone. This cell phone weighs only 4.55 oz. Compare that to the first cell phone which weighed in at 2 pounds!

The first cell phone call was placed on April 3, 1973 by Martin Cooper, then general manager of Motorola’s Communications System Division. The call was placed to Cooper’s rival at AT&T Labs from a New York City street.

The phone only offered one half hour of talk time for every recharging and sold for almost $4,000. Remember how cool we thought Michael Douglas looked in the movie Wall Street talking on his cell phone?

International Air Flights

July3

We now take it for granted that we can fly almost anywhere in the world. Just find some good flight deals, book your flight, and away you go.

International flight started in the United States in the 1930s with the introduction of Pan American World Airways (also known as Pam Am). It was founded as a seaplane service in Florida and became known as an innovator of air flight. For almost 40 years, Pan Am ruled the air with two flights that originated in San Francisco (Pam Am 001 and 002). These flights took 46 hours and made stops in Honolulu, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Kolkata, Delhi, Beirut, Istanbul, Frankfurt, London, and New York.

Due to rising operational costs, terrorists attacks and fuel costs, Pam Am was finally forced to declare bankruptcy in 1991. The assets of the airline were purchased by Delta as were some of the routes.

Of course, the most famous image of Pan Am is probably the arrival of the Beatles on one of Pan Am’s flights into New York!

Routers

March15

What is a router? A router is basically a computer that makes sure your mail, web requests, etc. get to the right place. The router was first developed in 1972 but could not guarantee that information would get to the proper place. Eventually routers got better at their job and the internet boomed. At first, Cisco was the only big name in routers, but now you can buy a Linksys router, Netgear router, LevelOne router and many other brands.

If you are really interested in technology, read How Routers Work.

James Bond Gadget Watches

December8

I figured a high class guy like James Bond would wear a Cartier watch or something else equally as expensive. However, most of James Bond’s watches have been Seiko. There were a few Rolex’s thrown in and even a Hamilton Pulsar. If you want to read all about James Bond’s gadget watches check out The Watchismo Times!

Shoe Fluoroscope

November9

Here is something I don’t remember – the Shoe Fluoroscope. The Shoe Fluoroscopes were X-ray machines that were installed in shoe stores in the early 20th century. There were not removed until the early 1960s. The fluoroscopes were really a gimmick, they were marketed as a better way to measure feet and those provide a better fitted shoe. However, a simple measurement would have sufficed.

Unfortunately, the devices exposed customers to approximately 25 to 70 rems per minute of radiation. Compare this to the allowed radiation of a nuclear plant worker – 5 rems per year!
