What Happens in Europe…

February9

It seems that high fashion in Europe eventually makes it way to the United States. Sometimes that includes car accessories as well. A new trend in Europe, led tail lights, is making its way here and you can now buy custom led tail lights for almost any make and model of car. I must say, they are pretty futuristic looking! But, since I drive a mini van, I don’t think I will make the switch!

Platform Beds

February4

Platform beds started to become popular in the 1970s. A simple mattress was put on the platform and they were not very comfortable. They also came in various shapes (remember the round bed in Austin Powers?). Those old beds were very uncomfortable and they soon made way for the mattress and box spring combo.

Things are not coming full circle. It seems that platform beds are again making a comeback. What is the difference? The mattress. It is not the old, lumpy mattresses from the 60s and 70s but a new kind of memory foam mattress. These mattresses are comfortable and less expensive than their mattress/box spring counterparts.

Rocky Balboa Gold Chain

January5

If you love gold chains and Rocky Balboa, then you need to purchase the Rocky Balboa Golden Boxing Glove Pendant! Yes, Rocky himself wore it in the movie. Of course, I find it a tad bit tacky, but I didn’t like any of the Rocky movies anyhow!

Futuro Home

December7

What was it about the 70s and the need to design things that looked space age? A Finnish architect named Matti Suuronen designed a UFO shaped house. In the late 60s and 70s we all believed that technology would be able to solve all the world’s ills. I guess designers thought that meant making everything look futuristic and space like. Of course, today you would need a pretty good real estate agent to be able to sell your 70s looking abode!

Baby Doll Dresses

November24

The 80s brought us lots of strange fashions. One of these was wearing what looked like fine lingerie as clothing! They were called baby doll dresses and tops. I am surprised that parents let their daughters wear some of these outfits to school. To refresh your memory, here is a picture:

Of course, what goes around, comes around, and the style is back again:

Seen On!

November17

Do you want to dress like a celebrity? I just found a new site called Seen On! Seen On! features products that are worn by celebrities on television and film. You can find handbags, jewelry, clothes and more. You can even buy bobble head Dwight dolls from The Office if you wish. I am on the lookout for a North Face jacket, but unfortunately, it doesn’t look like any celebrity has worn one lately. Oh well, they are still my favorite jackets!

Parachute Pants

August16

My daughter was preparing a skit for the camp she is attending and one of the songs they were going to use is “Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer. She had NO idea who MC Hammer was, so I made her watch the video. I told her she would have to do the MC Hammer dances, but she thought that would be too embarrassing.

On YouTube I found a great parody of the song – it is too funny! Aren’t you glad that parachute pants are no longer popular?

Air Jordan

July18

When Air Jordan shoes first came out in 1985, they became extremely popular all due to the endorsement by Michael Jordan who was then recognized as one of the best basketball players of all time. The problem was that the shoes were very expensive. There were many rumors floating around about kids beating each other up just to get their hands on a pair of the shoes.

I hadn’t heard much about the shoes recently, but they are still being manufactured and are still widely popular. Now they come in many different styles and colors. And, of course, they are still very expensive!

Saddle Shoes

July3

Saddle Shoes first gained popularity in the 50s and 60s when you could pick up a pair for about $3.00. Saddle Shoes are two-toned leather shoes most frequently seen in black and white. Other popular colors have included brown/white, blue/white, red/white and pink/white. Both the toe and the back are white. The name comes from the saddle of leather that is in the middle. This part also has the eyelets and laces.

The Saddle Shoe became less popular in the 70s (but the cheerleaders still wore them) and have gone in and out of popularity over the years. Today, a good pair of saddle shoes will run about $80.00.

Gym Uniforms

March5

Gym uniforms have definitely changed over the years! My first gym uniform was at middle school in 7th grade. It was a one piece cotton (not knit) green gym suit. It was so ugly and uncomfortable. We used to roll-up the shorts and arms just to be a little comfortable. In 8th grade we changed to twill shorts and green and white striped t-shirts. The shorts were so stiff and heavy.

On to High School. As a freshman we wore polyester shirts and shorts. The shirts were sleeveless and the material was that old 100% polyester that snagged and was just hideous. Eventually we changed to black shorts and black and white stripped t-shirts.

Today, my daughter, who is in 7th grade, is allowed to wear her own gym shorts and shirt. They have the option of purchasing a reversible t-shirt that is black on one side and gold on the other. The shirt is a little heavy but it is great for team play. The stuff they sell today to schools is much better at moisture management and much more fashionable! The variety is better and the gym shorts and shirts are actually made differently for girls and boys.
