SS Edmund Fitzgerald

November10

Today is the anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The ship was a freighter that was first launched on June 8, 1958. It was one of the largest boats on the Great Lakes at 730 feet long and 75 feet wide. On November 10, 1975, the Fitzgerald was sailing during a storm and sank in Canada waters on Lake Superior. It sank without any distress signals. Its entire crew of 29 perished and no bodies were ever recovered. When the boat was finally found, it was broken in two. The disaster was the subject of Gordon Lightfoot’s 1976 hit song, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”.
