PaperBoy

September3

Whatever happened to the job of paperboy. It seems that they no longer exists. Recently, a journalist at the San Francisco Chronicle tried to find a paper that still employed paperboys. He tried even the smaller papers. No one was hiring.

You can no longer see clean cut boys, riding their bikes, throwing papers onto their customer’s lawns, driveways or bushes. This is a job of the past. It used to be a great way for kids to learn responsibility, to manage money. Now, we are too afraid to let them leave the house alone. What a shame.

As a former paperboy in the 60’s, it sorta crossed my mind as to where they were?? Seems all the routes are taken over by adults. With the economy as it is these jobs mostly for kids are now a nessesary source of income for a lot of families.
When I did my route I walked it and slung the papers on target right where I wanted it. It was an Art. Maybe someday these great american jobs will return back to the kids. Those were days I’ll always remember and each time I do…I smile.
