My Top Computer Movies

June7

If you love anything computer and you get a thrill just installing new ram, then these movies are for you. Of course, if you are truly a computer geek, you may find that these movies have major flaws and are not really plausible, but hey, they are a lot of fun!

1. Sneakers – Robert Redford makes security systems. He and his team must break in and still a piece of important equipment. Entertaining and fun.
2. Independence Day – Who knew that a guy with a MAC could inject a computer virus into enemy space ships. It works and saves the world.
3. The Net – Sandra Bullock has her whole life erased. This is everyone’s biggest fear about the internet.
4. Pirates of Silicon Valley – This made for TV movie about Bill Gates and Steve Jobs was well made and very interesting. Read the book for more information.
5. Tron – Classic Disney film about going inside the computer. Kind of cheesy now, but a big hit back then.
6. War Games – One of my favorite Matthew Broderick films. A kid hacks into a defense system. Could happen.
7. The Matrix – I hated this movie. The computer stuff was interesting, but the acting was bad and story convuluted.
8. 2001: A Space Odyssey – HAL takes over!
9. I, Robot. New robots with positronic brains.
10. Office Space – Very FUNNY! Save a few pennies and you can make millions!

Alison Doody

June6

You might not recognize the name, but you may remember the face. Alison plays the Austrian Nazi sympathizer in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. Alison was born November 11, 1966 in Dublin, Ireland. She was discovered by a photographer and started a modeling and acting career. She appeared in the 1985 James Bond film “A View to a Kill” and then in The Last Crusade as Dr. Elsa Schneider in 1989. She turned down the lead role in Basic Instinct due to the sexual content and nudity. She was offered the role of Eowyn in the second two installments of Lord of the Rings, but was pregnant at the time. The offer would have involved filming for 18 months and no amount of progesterone or other hormonal therapies could have made life on a film set enjoyable.

Alison put acting on the back burner while raising her two daughters. She has recently returned to acting in a short film called “Benjamin’s Struggle.”

Jonathan Ke Quan

June6

Jonathan Ke Quan is probably best known for two roles – Short Round in Indiana and The Temple of Doom and as Data in The Goonies.

Jonathan was born Ke Huy Quan on August 20, 1971 in Vietnam. He left the country with his family when Saigon fell to the communists and later immigrated to the United States. When he was 12, he was offered the part of Short Round. After graduating from High School he attended the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts.

Quan has not appeared in very many movies or television shows recently, but is rumored to have a large fan base in Japan. He is currently 36 years old.

Investing Because of Celebrities

June2

I read with interest an article about investing in commercial real estate in New York City. The article suggested that the best investment would be to buy homes or apartments or businesses near celebrities homes. That’s right, it seems that the draw to live or shop near celebrities is so high that you may be able to make a profit from renting out such properties in the City.

Of course, only in a city like New York would this work. Everyone is tightly packed next to each other the possibility of spotting a celebrity is relatively high!

Denholm Elliot

June2

Since the last Indiana Jones film was released, we have been watching the previous three films. I always thought that Denholm Elliot, who played Marcus Brody in the first and third movies was excellent. Elliott was born May 31, 1922 in London, England and attended Malvern College. He was trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. During World War II, he served as a radio operator and gunner. He was shot down over Denmark and was a POW in Czechoslovkia for the rest of the war.

He made his first film in 1949 and played various roles. In 1981, he was cast as Dr. Marcus Brody in the first Indiana Jones film – The Raiders of the Lost Ark. He would later reprise the role in 1989 in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. He also appeared as Dan Aykroyd’s butler in the 1983 film Trading Places. His last role was in Noises Off in 1992.

Denholm was bisexual and was married to Virginia McKenna in 1954 for a few months and then to Susan Robinson with which he had two children. His daughter, Jennifer Elliot, hung herself in 2003. In 1987, Elliot was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and died in 1992 from complications due to the disease at his home in Spain. He was 70 years old.
