Fakes

March17

Everyone knows that Hollywood is sometimes just about been fake – fake noses, fake breasts, fake butts. What I didn’t realize was that some actors also have fake eyeglasses. In order to appear smarter, some celebrities will don cheap eyeglasses with clear lenses. This gives them the appearance of genius for just a few bucks!

One Mama Left

March17

I have been California Dreamin’ lately with the cold weather returning. Only one member of the group The Mamas & the Papas is still alive – Michelle Phillips. What happened to the rest?

The Mamas & the Papas was founded by John Phillips and included his wife Michelle, Denny Doherty and Cass Elliot. The band ran out of money and relocated to the Virgin Islands where Michelle earned them enough money through gambling to bring them back to New York. The song California Dreamin’ was released in 1965 was a chart climber as was another hit, Monday, Monday.

In June 1966, Michelle was kicked out the band after it was found that she was having an affiar with Doherty. A new girl was hired, Jill Gibson, but she was later released and Michelle hired back again.

The band released three albums and after a rude comment by John Phillips about Elliot in front of Mick Jagger, Elliot quit the band. However, she was contractually obligated to complete another album and she did. She also made a solo album that did quite well.

The band split again, but the record company threatened to sue each member if they did not make a fifth album. The album, People Like Us, was released in 1971 and was the final album.

Cass Elliot – Cass had a successful solo career after the break up. She died of a heart attack on July 29, 1974, she was 33 years old.

John Phillips – John continued to write and perform. In the 80s he formed a group called The New Mamas & the Papas with his daughter Mackenzie, Denny Doherty and Spanky McFarlane (from Our Gang). Denny dropped out after John returned to drugs and Mackenzie (also into drugs) ran away. He died of heart failure on March 18, 2001. He was 65 years old.

Denny Doherty – Denny had one single hit and later produced a stage musical – Dream a Little Dream, supposedly about the group. He hosted a children’s TV show in Canada in the 90s. Denny died of kidney failure on January 19, 2007, he was 66 years old.

Michelle Phillips – Michelle released an album in 1977 with no success. She later became an actress and starred in both Knot’s Landing and Beverly Hills 90210. She is the last surviving member of the group. She is 62 years old.

Routers

March15

What is a router? A router is basically a computer that makes sure your mail, web requests, etc. get to the right place. The router was first developed in 1972 but could not guarantee that information would get to the proper place. Eventually routers got better at their job and the internet boomed. At first, Cisco was the only big name in routers, but now you can buy a Linksys router, Netgear router, LevelOne router and many other brands.

If you are really interested in technology, read How Routers Work.

Las Vegas

March7

I will be traveling through Las Vegas this year and I have my $20 of gambling money all saved up! I am not a big gambler, but I sure wish that I could get some of those hotel deals that the big spenders get. I would love to have a suite, all decked out, on top of some pricey hotel. But hey, I guess you have to spend money to get things for free.

Las Vegas isn’t the sorry little desert town that it used to be in the 40s. Take a look at the difference 60 years makes:

Worst Movies of 2007

March7

What would be a best movies list without the worst movies. Here they are, also by Moviefone:

10. Rush Hour 3 – More of the same from Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker
9. Premonition – Sandra Bullock stars in this thriller
8. Smokin’ Aces

6. Because I Said So – Girl Flick that looks very uninteresting.
5. Good Luck Chuck – Jessica Alba stars.
4. The Number 23 – everything adds up to 23. Who knew.
3. Daddy Day Camp – awful sequel to the original
2. Georgia Rule – three generations of women, sexual abuse and alcoholism.
1. Norbit – Eddie Murphy’s worst film choice yet

Celebrities in the Bathroom

March7

We all must use the bathroom, but did you know that there is a site just for celebrity bathroom sitings? I am not talking about celebrities washing their hands at bathroom vanities, but celebrities doing their business. The Toilet Museum features pics of celebrities in the bathroom. Don’t worry, all the pictures are “clean.”

Women’s Health

March7

Years ago, most health studies were focused on white males only. Health professionals finally realized that they needed to focus on different groups as well in order to better treat their patients. It was soon noticed that different ethnic groups and sexes respond to drugs and treatments differently. Today you will find many different websites that focus just on Women’s Health. Certain supplements and remedies such as progesterone, calcium citrate and magnesium are no known to help with certain health issues.

Madge

March7

Remember the Palmolive dishing detergent commercials from the 60s? Madge was the manicurist who always had her clients hands soaking in Palmolive.

Jan Miner, who played Madge, was born October 15, 1917 in Boston. She trained for the stage and appeared for 35 years often with her husband Richard Merrell. She appeared in the film Lenny with Dustin Hoffman and Mermaids with Cher. She also made frequent guest appearances on the television show Law and Order. She was hired to play the character of Madge on the Palmolive commercials in the 60s and ended up playing the character for 27 years. Miner passed away on February 15, 2004 at the age of 86.

Glengarry Glen Ross

March3

When I used to work in a sales office, our sales director would bring out the movie Glengarry Glen Ross every year to show to the sales people. The movie takes place in a real estate office. The sales people sale both residential and commercial real estate. The manager of the office decides to put together a little competition. The winner gets a Cadillac and the loser gets fired!

The competition puts everyone on edge and no one wants to be fired. This movie highlights mostly the bad of sales offices. The distribution of leads, the dog-eat-dog mentality and the uncaring attitudes of the bosses. Worth watching if you work in a sales office!
