Where’s The Beef?

December19

Remember the classic Wendy’s commercial “Where’s The Beef?” Here is it is to refresh your memory:

The star of the ad was Clara Peller. She was born August 4, 1902 in Chicago, Illinois and was 81 years old when she starred in the Wendy’s commercials. She was fired from Wendy’s when she did a Prego commercial. In response to the question “where’s the beef?” she responded “I found it!” She died in 1987 at the age of 85.

Pell Grants

December17

When I went to college back in the 1980s, there was (and still is) a Federal program called Pell Grants. Since my family did not make a lot of money, I was able to receive my tuition money from the Federal Government. This really helped me, since I had to scrimp through the year on the money that I made every summer working. I always had just enough to pay for my rent, food, books and other supplies. I didn’t have a car, go out to eat very often, or buy expensive clothes and shoes like I see a lot of college kids doing these days.

Back then, we didn’t have TuitionWise student loans, which will loan up to $40,000 for college. More money would have made my life a little easier in college, but the struggle also helps build character. My children will definitely not be living high on the hog when they are in college!

McDonald’s Commercials

December17

McDonald’s has had some pretty catchy commercials over the years. The one below, is one of their first featuring Ronald McDonald. Good thing Ronald received a make over in future commercials. He is a little creepy here!

Casino

December14

One of my favorite jokes, was a routine I saw by David Spade. It was right after the movie Casino came out in 1995 starring Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci. The movie is basically focused on a Las Vegas hotel and casino that De Niro manages. Of course, it is all about the mob. The joke went like this:

“Casino. Ca-saw-it the first time, when it was called GoodFellas!”

GoodFellas was another movie about the mob, starring Joe Pesci. Similar themes, similar characters. I think David Spade hit the nail right on the head!

I see Dead People

December14

I found a cool website that has all types of things for bloggers. I thought I would check part out – Who died on my birthday? Well, on my actual birthday, over 122,000 people dies (I hope they all had term life insurance quotes). They also included a list of people who died on the same date as my birthday. Glenn Hughes, singer in The Village People died on March 4th as well as Minnie Pearl, John Candy and Pope Lucius I.

An Elf New York Trip

December14

One of our families favorite holiday movies is ELF starring Will Farrell. We were watching it the other day and decided that we needed to take an “Elf New York City Trip.” What would that include? Here is what we thought we could do:

  • Jump across the white rectangles in a cross walk.
  • Spin around and around in a revolving door.
  • Take flyers from those flyer people.
  • Hop on the beds in a department store.
  • Ride up an escalator doing the splits.
  • Go into a deli that serves the World’s Best… (coffee, pizza, etc.) and congratulate them!
  • Go to an Italian restaurant and order plain spaghetti. Pull out a bottle of maple syrup and eat it.
  • Go ice skating at Rockefeller Center.
  • Throw snow balls in Central Park.
  • Sing loud and clear for all to hear.
  • Optional – Eat gum off the subway rails. (OK we would never do this)

Did I miss anything?

James Bond Gadget Watches

December8

I figured a high class guy like James Bond would wear a Cartier watch or something else equally as expensive. However, most of James Bond’s watches have been Seiko. There were a few Rolex’s thrown in and even a Hamilton Pulsar. If you want to read all about James Bond’s gadget watches check out The Watchismo Times!

Futuro Home

December7

What was it about the 70s and the need to design things that looked space age? A Finnish architect named Matti Suuronen designed a UFO shaped house. In the late 60s and 70s we all believed that technology would be able to solve all the world’s ills. I guess designers thought that meant making everything look futuristic and space like. Of course, today you would need a pretty good real estate agent to be able to sell your 70s looking abode!

Teen Magazines

December7

When I was a pre-teen and teen, we used to love to go down to the local grocery store and for 75 cents pick up a copy of Tiger Beat or 16 magazine. Every time my mom saw us with those magazines I think it gave her a migraine! They were actually quite calm back in the 70s.

They always had the cool pin up posters in the middle. My favorites were Bobby Sherman, Davy Jones and Donny Osmond!

Steve Howe

December7

I used to be a HUGE Los Angeles Dodgers fan. One of the pitchers that I admired was Steve Howe. Unfortunately for Steve, he got himself into a bit of trouble which effectively ruined his career and most likely caused his death.

Steve was born March 10, 1958 in Pontiac Michigan. He played for the University of Michigan and was a two-time All Big Ten selection. He made his major league debut with the Dodgers at age 22 and had 17 saves and was named Rookie of the Year. In 1981 he helped the Dodgers win the World Series against the Yankees (that was sooooo sweet!).

In 1983, he checked into a substance abuse center. In 1984, he was suspended for the whole season for substance abuse. During his 17 year career, he was suspended from baseball seven times. Howe pitched for the Minnesota Twins and the Texas Rangers and ended his career with the New York Yankees. In 1992, he was banned for life from baseball but appealed the decision and pitched in 1994 with a great season. He was released from the Yankees in 1996.

Howe claimed in his 1989 autobiography, “Between the Lines: One Athlete’s Struggle to Escape the Nightmare of Addiction,” that he was recovering because of his commitment to evangelical Christianity. However, on April 28, 2006, Howe was killed when his pickup truck rolled over. The toxicology report showed he had methamphetamine in his system (exact amounts unknown).

Howe was only 48 when he died and left behind two children.
